Some nights were more successful than others, and while you’d never see any of these bands play poorly, if you hit a show on a great night, you would be rewarded with music that could levitate you off your feet. During performances, while they played their hit songs, they also were continually experimenting, listening to one another and the “music in the room,” searching for the elusive muse that locked-in communication between band members and took the music to a higher level. And that was the beauty of seeing bands like the Rolling Stones, the Grateful Dead, The Who, The Allman Brothers, Santana and others. At least they were that way back in the day. The reason is, The Rolling Stones are the kind of band that works themselves into a rock and roll groove to make the magic work and they don’t play everything note for note the same way every night. These shows have been bootlegged for over 40 the years, and I am one of those folks who have bought a fair-amount of Rolling Stones’ boots. I was reading our own Classics Du Jour the other day when I spied, under “Latest Headlines,” that The Rolling Stones were going to release recordings from two small shows they did in Toronto at the El Macombo club in 1977. Initially, the concept was to record one side of new material and one side of classic covers but that idea was scrapped and only one cover (‘Ain’t Too Proud to Beg’) made the final tracklist. The album, as its title suggests, is a collection of good old-fashioned rock songs. They wound up working on ‘It’s Only Rock ‘n Roll (But I Like It),’ which Jagger claimed as the title song of The Stones’ next record. Wood was working on a solo album when Jagger and Richards met him. This was also their last album to feature guitarist Mick Taylor, who was eventually replaced by Ronnie Wood. They would produce or co-produce every subsequent Stones release. After working with producer Jimmy Miller on a stretch of albums widely considered their best, the duo felt they were ready to take the reins. While this album has a relatively low profile in their discography, apart from its title song, it did mark a turning point for the band.įor starters, it was the first Stones album produced by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. Another legendary act to release an album in 1974, The Rolling Stones dropped their 12th studio album, It’s Only Rock ‘n Roll.
